Once the home of a successful oyster dredgerman, the Captain’s House at Harbour Street, is in the heart of Whitstable’s conservation area.

Just moments from the seafront and harbour, the spacious five-bedroom house was originally owned by influential mariner and fisherman Captain Jasper Rowden, who was born in 1728.

It has a wealth of original period features, such as Georgian fireplaces, wide oak floorboards, exposed beams, sash windows and joinery.

And if you think the pagoda in the 70-foot garden looks extremely grand in its setting, you won’t be surprised to learn it is thought to have come from Herne Bay’s original West Pier.

An entrance hall leads through a stained glass door to a 17-foot sitting room with cast iron fireplace, which has shelving units and storage cupboards to either side.

There is a sash window to the back garden and an exposed bressumer beam.

The dining room and study both have cast-iron fireplaces and oak floors.

The kitchen has an original cast-iron oven that has been retained as a feature, and there are square-edged woodblock work surfaces. There are a butler sink, a larder cupboard, oak flooring and exposed beams.

There is also a utility room with butler sink and wood-panelled stable door to the bathroom.

The downstairs cloakroom has recessed halogen lighting.

To the first floor there are three double bedrooms and a bathroom, which has a panelled bath and a corner shower cubicle.

A further two bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom are on the second floor.

Directly to the back of the property is a brick terrace with pathways leading to the end of the garden, which is predominantly laid to lawn and flanked by borders stocked with a variety of mixed planting.

There is an area of raised decking, a pond, two timber storage sheds and a Victorian streetlamp as well as the ornate pagoda. The garden is enclosed by a brick wall and timber-panelled fencing.

The Captain’s House, which is half a mile from Whitstable Station, is on the market for £750,000.
