Get in the queue for Christmas jobs

00:00, 27 September 2001

PEOPLE can sign up for some extra cash over Christmas with more than 100 jobs available at Gravesend's top stores. A two-day Christmas recruitment fair is being held on Friday, September 28, and Saturday, September 29 - and job seekers can visit it for free.

Staff from Argos, Woolworths, Denbenhams, Marks and Spencer and Comet will all be there to help with recruitment.

The fair is being held at the Towncentric from 10am to 7pm on trhe Friday and from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday.

Woolworths get more staff every Christmas for the heavy sales period. Manager Steve Day said: "We see our sales go up five-fold over Christmas and a near 50 per cent increase in staff."

He is looking for people to work on the shop floor during trade time and out of normal working hours.

There are positions for 12 to 20 hours during the week and four to eight hours on a Saturday.

Part time work of 15 hours a week is available at Argos, as well as separate shifts on particular days.

At Debenhams 21 positions are vacant in several departments and with a mixture of hours.

Marks and Spencer have 18 places to fill and Comet has signed up to the fair taking the number of jobs at the fair to more than 100.

The Gravesend employment service will also be present for job seekers to register on a database for other retailers to recruit staff from.

The Christmas recruitment fair has been arranged by Gravesend town centre initiative.

Argos sales manager, Maureen Wood, said: "It allows us to fill many of our vacancies for the festive season in a different way to simply reading about a job.

"Here we get to talk to people face-to-face, so what they will be doing can be fully explained and we can fit their needs better."
