CAMPAIGNERS against the proposed changes to Chatham’s two-way system say the council is disregarding any of their concerns.

Traders who run businesses in Medway Street were furious when a letter arrived from Cllr Phil Filmer, saying that Medway Street will become two-way again, but only for buses and taxis.

The traders had wanted the road to be made two-way again for other traffic, too. The letter was send to Diane Turner, who runs Turner’s of Medway with husband Frank.

She is spear-heading a campaign to save the Sir John Hawkins’ flyover and said: "When I received the letter, I was gobsmacked - they are meant to be reviewing the plans for the next few months, not sticking to the master plan.

"People travelling from the Rainham or Gillingham areas who want to come and see our forecourt, will have to drive to Rochester to come back into Chatham.

"We are not going to give up - the businesses in Medway Street depend on two-way traffic flowing through it."

Cllr Filmer denied the switch back to one-way was set in stone.

He said: "No final decision has yet been taken on the future of the flyover."
