Second Sheppey crossing to open 'any day'
00:00, 22 June 2006
AFTER two years of construction, the Sheppey Crossing could be open any day now, putting an end to the traffic queues on and off the Island.
An official opening ceremony is due to take place on Monday, July 3, but construction bosses have said there is a possibility the new high-level bridge could be open to traffic before then.
A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency said: “On projects like this, subject to necessary clearances, it is possible that schemes open to traffic before official opening ceremonies. If that is the case, we will consider opening the Sheppey Crossing before July 3.”
To the public eye it looks almost complete, with Queenborough Corner and Cowstead Corner taking shape and the bridge work complete, but there are still final touches to be made.
If it is open before July 3, bosses will have to close the bridge again when Roads Minister Dr Stephen Ladyman will officially open the Sheppey Crossing in front of invited guests.
