Stack in place as strike and winds cause havoc
13:20, 01 March 2008
CONTINUED strike action by SeaFrance workers coupled with high winds means Operation Stack is in place on the M20.
Ferry officers have walked out for a third day in a dispute over pay.
P&O Ferries between Dover and Calais were also suffering severe delays because of high winds in the Channel.
Phase two of Operation Stack is now in place meaning the M20 is closed between junction 8 (Leeds Castle, near Maidstone) and junction 9 (Ashford). Phase one has closed the carriageway between junction 11 (Hythe) and junction 12 (Cheriton).
Traffic is diverted onto the A20 with lorries allowed back onto the motorway to queue.
A police spokesman said it is anticipated that the measure will be in force for the whole weekend and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
