Car crashes through wall of Cinque Port Arms pub in New Romney
00:01, 16 January 2016
A manager told of the horrific moment she saw a car smash straight into her pub.
Beryl Swift watched in shock as the car ended up wedged inside the Cinque Port Arms in New Romney.
Miss Swift, acting manager, said: “I was just pulling pints. I heard a bang. I looked up and I could see the car headlights coming through.
“It happened so fast but the car seemed to come in and bounce back.
“Luckily no-one was sitting in that part of the pub but there were 10 customers at the other side. One woman had been close by and everybody was very shocked.
“I did my best to stay calm.
“The ambulance was called and the crews took over. The car was eventually taken out. All the staff then turned up to clear up the damage.”
The car hit the High Street pub directly in the front, at the far left side, at Wednesday lunchtime last week.
Police say they were called at 1.11pm that day.
A spokesman added: “There were no reports of any serious injuries and a man was arrested in connection with the incident” – on suspicion of taking a motor vehicle without permission.
South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed that one person needed hospital treatment.
It sent out two vehicles – a standard ambulance and one from the Hazardous Area Response Team.
Early reports of the crash were put on Facebook that day.
Nicki Davy wrote: “The front of the pub looked a real mess. Hope it hasn’t done too much structural damage.”
The arrested man, a 30-year-old from New Romney, was bailed until January 22.
