Firefighters have spent four hours putting out fires at Lydd Ranges overnight.

Crews were called just before 9pm last night and 25 firefighters tackled five fires across 20 hectares of cut straw and reeds.

One fire was in a section of reed beds and spread across 10 hectares and another covered 300q metres of grass.

They have been searching the area this morning for hotspots and damping down.

Crews used a fogging unit to blast affected areas with a super fine mist to suppress fires using minimal water and penetrate deeply into the base of the undergrowth.

They also used backpacks with water hose sprays and beaters to contain the fires.

A KFRS spokesman said: " The area is mainly grass and gorse which over many years has been compacted.

"This means a fire can be very deep seated and can spread, especially during periods of prolonged hot, dry weather when there has been little rain to saturate the undergrowth."
