The manager of a fish and chip shop was left buzzing after hit-machine Ed Sheeran popped in for a takeaway.

The star, one of the world's best-selling music artists, visited Greatstone Fish Bar on Romney Marsh with his wife Cherry Seaborn yesterday afternoon.

They ordered scampi and chips plus a jumbo battered sausage each, two cans of Pepsi, and a bottle of ketchup from the restaurant, before eating them on the beach.

Manager Kam Bains, 27, said he initially didn't recognise the award-winning singer, who was wearing a hoodie and cap, when he came to the counter.

He said: "He came in around 2.30pm, and I didn't recognise him at first. And then I realised who it was.

"He was with his wife and I think it was just them two.

"I had a chat with him while his food was cooked.

"He said it was very quiet down here and said he was loving it. I think they were just walking around. I didn't see a car.

"I think he said his wife had a hockey match, maybe in Sevenoaks.

"We asked if they wanted to sit down but they said they would eat it on the beach."

Ed was indeed heading to Sevenoaks, he took a selfie with members of Sevenoaks Junior Hockey Club's team during the visit.

Mr Bains, who lives in Greatstone, said the pair came across as very down to earth.

He added: "He's massive, everyone loves his music and I am a big fan. But he was very down to earth.

"It was exciting, we were buzzing. I doubt I'll ever see him again, face to face.

"It is the first famous face we've had in the shop."

After the surprise visit, a picture of Ed making his order was posted on the Greatstone Fish Bar's Facebook page, with the caption: "Thanks for visiting us today."

It received a lot of reaction from excited fans - 113 comments and 105 shares - with some sad to have missed him.

One commented: "You what?! I would have dropped everything for that man."

Another said: "Ed is local. I repeat, Ed is local."

Mr Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, and has had eight number 1 singles and released four albums and 14 extended plays.

He has also acted, appearing in an episode of Games of Thrones, and films Bridget Jones's Baby and Yesterday, which co-stared Ashford actor Alexander Arnold.

People on social media reported seeing him on the beach with his meal yesterday, while others speculated whether he might be filming a music video.

The Marsh has provided locations for several in the past - including Nicki Minaj's video for Freedom and band New Hope Club's video for Love Again.

But the Brit winner is not the first famous face to have visited Kent this year.

Tom Hardy popped into The White Lion in Tenterden with his family for dinner last month, and Harry Potter star Michael Gambon took a trip on the Kent & East Sussex Railway.
