Four people have been injured and one man arrested after a car ploughed into a busy pub.

The Cinque Port Arms in New Romney had been busy with Friday night customers when the smash happened.

It is thought the driver of the Vauxhall Corsa had been asked to leave the venue earlier in the evening.

Police have confirmed a 24-year-old, reported to be the driver of the car from New Romney, has been arrested in relation to the crash and remains in custody.

A force spokesman said four other people were injured.

They added: "Three men were taken to a local hospital for treatment to injuries that have not been reported to be life threatening.

"The fourth injured person did not require hospital treatment."

Fire crews cut the driver free from the car and also helped paramedics treat three other men at the scene.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We had ambulance crews attend the scene including our Hazardous Area Response Team."

"The three other patients, all male, suffered non-life threatening injuries including fractures and were taken to William Harvey Hospital," the ambulance spokesman added.

The news comes weeks after it was announced the pub was on the market for £1.2m.

The High Street pub was put up for sale following reports of poor health in the family who runs it.

Kevin Gibbons, landlord of the Grade II listed building said he will be sad to see the 700-year-old pub go.

He added: “We have worked so hard on this place and we have created a monster of a business, we just can’t cope with the demand now as things have changed."

Mr Gibbons and business partner Sharon Epps took over the pub two years ago in their first venture as landlords.

They have since shelled out more than £500,000 in an ambitious overhaul.

Friday night's drama follows an incident in January 2016 when a driver was arrested after a car hit the wall of the pub.

Beryl Swift, who was acting manager at the time of the incident, said: "It happened so fast but the car seemed to come in and bounce back.

“Luckily no-one was sitting in that part of the pub but there were 10 customers at the other side. One woman had been close by and everybody was very shocked."
