Blueprints have surfaced showing plans to demolish a golf course’s clubhouse to make way for homes.

Leaked papers show Littlestone Golf Club directors hope to level its Warren Clubhouse to allow the development of sixteen flats.

The proposals emerged as the board seeks to raise £2.2 million for improvements, car park upgrades and better-kept lawns for example.

If plans progress five homes would also be built on the south east of the site off St Andrew’s Road, while the main clubhouse could be extended.

But club members have hit out at the proposals as “selling off the family silver” and called for its chairman Stuart Gremo to scrap the plans.

They also questioned Mr Gremo’s business acumen after his Cardy Construction firm, which employed hundreds of people, folded in 2016 facing claims of more than £18.1 million of debts, as detailed on our website.

One club member of ten years said: “There are a lot of people who aren’t happy about this, the asset is extremely important to the community.

“It makes you wonder what business sense is leading us down the path at the moment, it is lovely to have a traditional golf course.

“It is an attractive asset to have, there is no need to sell off the family silver.”

A Warren member who pays £550 a year annually echoed their concerns, adding: “There is no reason for this at all, the club isn’t in a bad place financially.

“Some time ago we were told selling part of the car park for homes would mean the course would be upgraded.

“That never happened so why should it now?”

Golf club bosses in September voted to plough £80,000 of the organisation’s cash into thrashing out a planning bid and to sell off the land.

A note circulated to members says upgrading the course will help put the club on the map, allowing it to become a future wedding venue.

“The current proposals for development as indicated on the plans on display would allow the clubhouse to be completely updated including new changing rooms for all.

“(It will also include) modern kitchens and also for a multi- use function room for events – specifically and additionally available to host external functions – weddings etc.

“This facility will raise the profile of the Club locally and generate much needed external revenue, from times where otherwise the Club would be quiet.

“The proposed Dormy House (sic) for “Play and Stay” visitors will also generate further revenue – this to be provided within one of the new properties proposed for the Warren car park.

Spokesman Sarah Saunders said the plans were approved following a majority vote by members.
