An historic war fort situated in a seafront car park has gone on sale for quarter of a million pounds.

Martello Tower No.25, in Dymchurch, on Romney Marsh, is currently in a state of disrepair. But planning permission has already been granted to turn the Grade II listed tower into a holiday home.

External alterations would include added glazed panels and window openings, together with the provision for three on-site parking spaces.

The tower, in the Dymchurch Beach Car Park, offers views over the English Channel, having been built during the Napoleonic Wars between 1805 and 1809.

It is one of 27 Martello towers erected along the Kent coast - and 74 in total along the south coast - to protect the British Empire from over sea invasions.

It is now being marketed by Savills for a guide price of £250,000.

Its online description reads: "Martello Tower No.25 was built as one of a pair (with Martello Tower No.24 to the north) to protect the Marshland Sluice, one of the main sluices helping to drain Romney Marsh.

"Constructed during the Napoleonic Wars, conveniently situated on the beach and near to the centre of the village of Dymchurch, the tower will provide an excellent base to explore the Romney Marsh and nearby attractions such as Port Lympne Wildlife Park."

It also states the site "is not suitable for a permanent residential dwelling due to the lack of an external amenity area".

Will Peppitt, of Savills, said: "This fascinating building offers a rare opportunity to create a unique holiday let on the beach, with uninterrupted views of the coastline.

"On a clear day you can see the French coastline too.”
