A man has suffered serious injuries after a horse box and car crashed.

Two horses had to receive oxygen treatment from firefighters after they were taken to a nearby garden away from the crash on the A259 Dymchurch Road just before 3pm.

The crash happened between The Plough and The Warren Inn.

The man's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening but have been described as "serious" by police.

First aid was given to one of the two animals.

Motorists reported lengthy delays around New Romney after the road was closed in both directions.

A vet was called to assess the condition of horses being transported in the horse box which being towed by another car.

Lydd Watch Manager Russ Harrison, who attended the incident, said: “The Citroen was on its side with the driver stuck in the car but members of the public had managed to roll it back on all four wheels and help the driver out.

"Meanwhile someone else had cut the trailer ties to free the horses.

“The driver of the Citroen was initially treated by an off-duty Kent Fire and Rescue Service firefighter prior to our arrival.

"We then gave him oxygen and first aid and handed him into the care of the ambulance service.

"The two occupants of the Mercedes had managed to get themselves out of their vehicle.

“Both horses were visibly shaken; one had lots of little cuts but was quite alert, the second looked in a worse condition with broken teeth, cuts to the front jaw and it was bleeding from its mouth and nose.

"We administered oxygen therapy until the vet arrived and were told it was the best thing we could’ve done for the animal.”

The specially designed pet oxygen masks were provided for Lydd fire station earlier this year by Dungeness Power Station through a donation to not-for profit organisation Smokey Paws.

Police shut the road while they waited for the vehicles to be recovered. It was reopened just after 5pm.

Firefighters assisted paramedics in giving first aid to the injured man.
