Residents left confused by unusually large explosions on Romney Marsh, Camber and Rye
15:00, 07 June 2016
Houses were left shaking after a series of loud bangs which were heard for miles around a military firing range.
Bemused residents from Brookland round to Dungeness commented on hearing two very loud explosions that did not seem to be "normal Lydd range activity".
It has been revealed the cause was due to pieces of Second World War ordnance being detonated.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed a Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team were working on Lydd demolition range at the time, shortly before midday yesterday.
People took to social media commenting they were concerned it was not regular army activity in Lydd.
Explosions are a common occurrence and residents are usually used to hearing bangs on the ranges at Hythe and Lydd.
Later in the afternoon, residents also posted about hearing several jets flying along the coast at Folkestone and began speculation about why they were flying low.
But the MoD said there was no "exceptional activity" and allayed residents' concerns about more sinister activity they were on regular training exercises.
A spokesman said: "Nothing exceptional has been flagged so I would put it down to regular training.
"As part of routine training serials, jets have been flying over this area."
