A man who plays pool for England's disabled team is feeling very proud after finishing runner up at the European Championships.

Darren Madden, from St Mary's Bay on Romney Marsh, came second in the individual event at the competition, of which more than 150 people had entered.

He reached the final with Jonathan Adams, from Scotland, who beat him 4-1.

Darren, 46, also helped England get to the semi-finals in the team event at the same competition, held in Bridlington, Yorkshire earlier this month.

Darren, who was nicknamed Skippy as a child by his brother, said: "I was elated, and feeling very proud. But it was also bitter sweet.

"It was a massive achievement to get to the final, but once there I wanted to win."

Darren was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, a condition that causes multiple curved joints in areas of the body.

He has very little use of his hands and arms.

Instead he plays pool by putting the cue in his mouth.

He adds: "It's something I tried one day.

"I've never been someone who won't do something or try something because of disability."

Darren has played pool since he was 14 years old,when he played at youth club, later competing in the local pub league.

But it was in the last 15 years that he got more serious about the game.

The former Pent Valley student has competed at both national and European levels over the last few years, including the National Championships, World Championships, European Championships - playing for both the England team and individually - and at the Golden 8 Ball pool festival, held in Blackpool.

Earlier this year he was the winner at the EBPF Tour Event.

His entry to the England team came about after a video of Darren competing in Yarmouth in 2017 received more than half a million views on Youtube.

He was contacted by a magazine and on the back of that interview he was picked for the England squad to play for their specials squad.

Darren is also a driver for the volunteer bureau, using his feet instead of arms to drive the vehicle.
