A maniac driver ran a red light while using his mobile phone on a dangerous junction.

The motorist nearly knocked down a mother and her three children where a schoolboy was knocked down three days before.

Terrified Michelle Callander said: “Not for the first time my boys and I, aged five and under, were nearly run over as a driver was not paying attention and playing on his phone.

“He drove straight through a red light. Good job I was paying attention otherwise I would probably be on my way to hospital right now.”

Ms Callander revealed the incident on The Real Romney Marsh Watch Facebook page today.

It happened on the junction of the B2071 Station Road and the A259 High Street, close to Sainsbury’s.

Ms Callander also wrote: “Note to all drivers please, please pay attention when driving through traffic lights up by Sainsbury’s.”

On Tuesday, a 13-year-old schoolboy was hit by a car at the same spot after running across the High Street from the Sainsbury’s side.

The boy, from the nearby Marsh Academy secondary school, was not badly hurt so an ambulance was not needed for him.

Resident Hayley Banyard, who witnessed that accident, told KentOnline: “This is a daily problem. Quite often parents have to grab hold of their young children to stop them following teenagers who run between traffic.

"The majority of them find it really funny. It’s scary.”

She added that she hoped KentOnline highlighting the dangers would make people take more care.

Police say they have not classed the road as a particular accident blackspot.

But the website wwwcrashmap.co.uk shows there have been a total 12 accidents on or near the junction over the last 10 years, eight involving slight injuries, three more serious and one fatal.

However the fatal crash, on December 4, 2013, was thought to more likely to have had a medical root cause.

Nicholas Carey’s car went into the path of a lorry and an inquest heard that the effects of a brain tumour were the more likely reason that he lost control.
