More double yellow lines could be installed after parking chaos on Romney Marsh resulted in 'fist fights' among residents.

It is hoped the new restrictions proposed along Coast Drive, Lydd on Sea, will bring an end to blockages during the busy beach season.

At times, as many as 40 cars in a row are parked along the coastal road, leaving only a single lane for traffic.

This means oncoming traffic struggles to pass each other, including buses and emergency vehicles.

Tony Hills (Con), district councillor for Walland and Denge Marsh ward, has campaigned for intermittent double yellow lines along the stretch for years to end the issues.

He says the problems have resulted in fights among the car owners.

He said: "Not only can cars, buses or emergency vehicles not pass, but you've got a nuclear power station up the road.

"You've also got crews from the life boats using that route. Lots of elderly people living there and there carers can't get up there.

"One or two cars would be OK, but not 30 or 40.

"It doesn't happen all the time but when it does it is bad.

"There have been fist fights up there among motorists.

"I've had complaints too about people defecating between vehicles. It is horrendous."

The issue was taken up at the Folkestone and Hythe Joint Transportation Board last month, where councillors approved plans to add additional yellow line sections from Williamson Road to the corner by The Pilot public house to allow 'staggered parking'.

Council documents state this will create "areas to pull in and allow traffic to pass safely and stop larger vehicles such as buses mounting the footway".

Cllr Hills, also a member of Kent County Council for Romney Marsh, added: "I've been working this case for years.

"I think five car lengths of yellow lines, and then five lengths of no lines would work.

"There are existing yellow lines along Coast Drive but these are solid.

"When the wind is in the east, we get the kite surfers from Camber here. We're not structured for it.

"But at the same time you don't want to stop people having fun.

"It would be good too to extend the Lade car park, it is a good car park but gets filled very quickly and the overspill ends up on Coast Drive."

He adds: "It is a hot potato because you can't please everyone. There are a large number of people who don't want parking restrictions.

"But at same time some elderly people are desperate for it."

The next step is for the plans to go to public consultation, and Cllr Hills hopes the new lines could be installed by next season.
