Police searching for a former councillor who has been missing for two days have found a body.

Clifford Butler, who used to sit on New Romney town council, had not been seen since Tuesday.

Officers tonight confirmed they found a body of a 72-year-old man and the search had been called off.

A police spokesman said patrols were called to premises in Simone Weil Avenue, Ashford, at around 1.35pm following the discovery of a man's body.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious," he said.

"Formal identification has not yet taken place, however, the family of missing man Clifford Butler have been informed."

Coastguard and RNLI patrols were earlier spotted scanning the Marsh as part of the investigation into Mr Butler's disappearance.

He previously made headlines by highlighting healthcare strains and ambulance provisions on the Marsh in 2015.
