09:00, 03 August 2016

The Who frontman Roger Daltrey has officially opened the new Dungeness station on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.

Daltrey spoke about the magic of the little trains and recalled the first time he visited the railway in 1956.

He said it was "wonderful" to visit and see the railway is still creating the same magic as when he visited 60 years ago which he said is "imprinted on my memory like yesterday".

"I love Dungeness. It's a magical place like nowhere else in Britain."

He was mobbed by excited fans as he got off the specially laid on train.

The rock legend brought his grandchildren and said they'd had an amazing time visiting.

Mr Daltrey posed for photographs at the station, signed autographs, records and even one fan's guitar.

He also spoke about the plans for the AIMREC model railway centre in Ashford.

"It's progressing, we're forging ahead but we've just got to raise a lot of money.

"I think it's a solid business model but we'll see if it's got enough support.

"It's an idea we'd love to make happen and everything is in place."

The station, which opened last month, has already hosted its first few functions including a wedding reception and monthly Dungeness Supper Night.

The renovations means the railway can stay open at Dungeness during the winter which will employ more seasonal and full-time staff.

The Santa specials in the run up to Christmas will run to the station again this year.
