Firefighters scrambled to a 'fierce' bungalow blaze last night, after flames are thought to have spread from the garden.

Crews were called to the home in Dunes Road in Greatstone, near New Romney at around 8.15pm on Monday night (May 21).

The team wore breathing apparatus and fought the flames for more than an hour.

Three fire engines attended the scene at the domestic property, and used water from the hydrant supply and fire engine tanks.

There were no reports of any injuries, but a Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "The occupants were unfortunately unable to stay in the premises following the fire."

It's thought it be a temporary measure.

The British Red Cross support team were called to assist the occupants, but were no longer needed because the Kent Fire and Rescue volunteer response team were in attendance at after being called at 10.15pm.

Dymchurch station watch manager, James Kirk said: “Firefighters were faced with a fierce fire, which they quickly brought under control, using compressed air foam and hose reels to prevent the fire from spreading further.

"They removed some tiles from the roof and used a fog spike to rapidly reduce the heat and flames in the roof space, before it was fully extinguished by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

“A conservatory, fence and shed were destroyed by the fire, as well as some of the plastic facia and soffits at the side of the building.

"Approximately, 60% of the roof space was affected by heat and smoke, and the ground floor sustained water and light smoke damage.

"Crews worked hard to salvage property from the ground floor.”

Mr Kirk added: “The fire is being treated as accidental and is believed to have spread from a garden incinerator to the shed and fence, and the inside of the bungalow roof.

"Following this incident, we are reminding residents to make sure they position any bonfires or barbecues well away from outbuildings, trees and other property that could catch fire, and to ensure they are not left unattended.”

Crews stopped the fire spreading and extinguished the flames by 9.25pm.

UK Power Networks engineers were also called to isolate the electricity supply in the property.
