Emergency services were called to Dunkirk Close after the fire had spread to three sheds at the properties in the cul-de-sac.

Firefighters gave first aid to three people at the scene before they were taken into the care of paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb).

A Secamb spokesman said: "Crews in one ambulance and one car attended the scene. A man suffering from burns was taken to William Harvey Hospital.

"His burns were reported as being to his neck, arms and hands."

Fire crews in three fire engines were at the scene for more than two hours tackling the flames.

Wearing breathing apparatus, they used hose reel jets to battle the fire.

Police were called by the fire service at 8.10pm because residents had been hurt.

A spokesman said: "Police ruled out foul play and the incident is not being treated as suspicious."
