Emergency services were called to a "serious" two-car crash at Lydd last night.

Dungeness Road was closed while firefighters cut the roof off one of the vehicles as part of the rescue operation.

Two people were hurt and one was taken to hospital with neck injuries.

The crash happened just after 7pm. The road was closed for more than two hours and reopened at 9.45pm.

Paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance and fire crews from Kent Fire and Rescue were sent to the scene.

Officers the Civil Nuclear Defence Constabulary, which guards the nearby nuclear power station, described it as a "serious" road traffic collision in a Tweet.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "We were called to a two-car collision in Dungeness Road, Lydd, at 7.07pm.

"Officers attended alongside crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

"Two people were taken to a local hospital for treatment to injuries that were not reported to be serious.

"A road closure was enforced. This had been lifted by around 9.45pm."

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to Dungeness Road in Lydd near Romney Marsh to a crash involving two cars.

"Two fire engines attended and crews used hydraulic rescue equipment to remove the roof of one vehicle, freeing one casualty trapped inside. They were passed into the care of SECAmb paramedics."

A spokesman for SECAamb said: "We were called shortly before 7.15pm to reports of an RTC on Dungeness Road.

"We attended and one patient suffering from injuries including neck pain was assessed and treated before being taken to William Harvey Hospital.

"A second patient was discharged from our care at the scene."
