Voting underway in town council by-election

13:22, 22 May 2008

VOTING is underway in New Romney as the town goes to the polls for three vacant positions on the town council.

Polling is open at the Scouts Headquarters in Church Lane until 10pm tonight.

The candidates are:

Alma Walsh: Married to Terry with three children and four grandchildren and an active member of the Women's Institute for more than 30 years, Alma Walsh is interested in the history of New Romney and its role as a cinque port.

She says: "I would very much like to be a part of the town council and do my utmost to enhance the lives of the town and its residents."

Matthew "Terry" Walsh: Retired eye specialist Terry Walsh and his wife Alma have a 40 year association with Romney Marsh, and say they want to repay some of the enjoyment they have got from the area in that time.

He says: "New Romney is a town with a very long and interesting history and it needs and deserves your support to continue into the future.

"One of the ways we can ensure its continuation is to take the trouble to vote in local elections for people who are prepared and have the time to work for the town."

Elaine Gould: Elaine Gould has lived in New Romney for five years. As the director of a transport company and as a private hire driver she says she meets people of all ages and listens to their problems, including transport.

She says: “I am standing for election because I want to put something back into the community, ensure the town council spends its money wisely and help the community to the best of my ability as I am aware of a number of issues that need to be raised.”

David Bryan Stephenson: Shepway District Cllr for New Romney David Bryan Stephenson says he is standing for election to the town council so that, as a district representative, he can take the town’s concerns direct to the district council and officers.

He says his aim is to see a safer and cleaner town for residents and visitors.

Clive Goddard: Mr Goddard was not available to speak this week.
