A fisherman's cottage that features on the cover of a Pink Floyd album has been sold at auction for £215,000 - £55,000 above the guide price.

Garden Cottage at Dungeness is believed to be the one on the sleeve for the band’s compilation A Collection of Great Dance Songs.

It also featured in numerous TV programmes including Jayne Eyre and the Inspector Lynley Mysteries.

It was one of 168 lots listed by auctioneers Clive Emson at Maidstone over five days of sales. It was bought for way above the guide price of between £165,000 and £170,000.

Believed to have been built in the mid-19th century, the two-bedroomed wooden structure lies on the private Dungeness Estate.

Kevin Gilbert, auctioneer and familiar figure on BBC’s Homes Under the Hammer, said: “Our vendor believes this to be one of the original fisherman’s cottages on the estate and they are seldom available.

“This property requires improvement and refurbishment but there is huge potential and we had a lot of interest in it.

“It has a loft which was where the fishermen would have kept their nets. This might be turned into further bedrooms subject to all necessary consents being obtainable.

“The headland of Dungeness in which it is situated comprises a shingle bank that incorporates RSPB reserves, a power station and lighthouses.

“Garden Cottage has stunning views and lies within close proximity to The Pilot pub and restaurant and The Britannia pub.

A Collection of Great Dance Songs was released in November 1981 and the cover shows two ballroom dancers anchored to the ground and the cottage in the background.

The irony of the title was that the legendary progressive rock group did not produce dance numbers.

The record includes some of the band’s best known tracks, such as Money, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Another Brick In The Wall. Founder member Roger Waters left the band shortly after its release.

In common with most of the band’s record sleeve art, the cover was the work of design group Hipgnosis, who also worked with bands including 10cc.
