History-making Lydd Town want to do things their way in the FA Vase.

Town take on Combined Counties League Holyport in a First-Round tie at the Lindsey Field this Saturday (3pm).

They’ve never reached this stage before and intend to enjoy the experience.

Lydders boss Mickey Doyle has done his homework but is more interested in what his own team bring to the table.

He said: “We’ve spoken to a few people about Holyport, so we’ve got something to work with, but I don’t want to think about them too much.

“I want to concentrate on ourselves and what we want to do. If you focus on the opposition too much, it can take away from your own game.

"At the end of the day, we’re at home, we’re a good side and we want to focus on what we do and play to the best of our ability.

“It’s important we have a few ideas of what they do, so we can counter it, but I want the opposition to be worrying about us, not us changing our game for them.

“Let’s impose our game on them and hopefully we can get a good crowd in and they’ll make plenty of noise.

“I know the boys appreciate it when there’s a good atmosphere and it’s nice and loud.”

It’s a big day for Lydd - both the team and the club - but Doyle is keen to keep things as normal as possible for his players and avoid adding unnecessary pressure.

They have a decent chance with Holyport 17th in their league, while Lydd top Southern Counties East Division 1.

Doyle said: “We’ll prepare everything the same, we won’t change what we do, but it’s important we enjoy the game.

“Some of the boys have never played in the Vase before, some have never played at this level and some have played higher.

“Let’s enjoy the occasion, enjoy it as a group and help each other out. That’s the last thing I’ll say to the players before they go out.

“As a management team we’ve got to stay calm in the moment but at the same time I’ll be kicking and heading every ball.”

Lydd lost 4-0 Hollands & Blair in the Kent Senior Trophy on Tuesday night.
