Lydd Town manager Scott Porter says they need more legs in the team to maintain Southern Counties East play-off hopes

New boss Scott Porter feels Lydd need more energy in their team to cope with the young guns in Southern Counties East.

The Lydders have plenty of big-name players who have enjoyed success at higher levels.

And while you can’t buy experience, Porter knows that isn’t enough on its own to prosper.

“On paper, it’s a very good squad,” said Porter.

“But in this league, you’ve got to have legs and the legs aren’t quite there.

“There’s a lot of young players who make it hard for teams, especially the experienced ones, so we’ve got to be at the races in every game from now to the end of the season to try and get in the play-offs.

“The team needs managing and they need to buy into what I’m trying to do and how I’m trying to do it.

“It’s difficult for them as well because they’re used to doing things a certain way and then a new manager comes in and wants to put their stamp on it, so they’ve got to adapt.

“We’re still in the hunt for the play-offs but we’ve got to turn things around and go on a run as quick as we can because the gap is getting bigger. We’ve got to work together to get it right.”

Lydd were on course for their first under Porter on Saturday.

They led promotion-chasing Corinthian 1-0 through Charlie Dickens but conceded three times in the last five minutes.

“We never looked in danger, our goalkeeper never had a save to make,” said Porter.

“We didn’t create an awful lot but Corinthian defended well.

“They’re a good side. They’ve been together a long time and they never give up. Individual errors cost us.

“We haven’t picked up at the back post for the first goal, the second is a penalty - that’s four conceded in three games - and the third we’re trying to play offside and my teams don’t do that.

“Once the first one went in, the heads went down and we crumbled.

“It was really disappointing, given the players we’ve got, and how dominant we were. It was just a mad five minutes that killed us.

“We’ve got a lot of injuries but there are no excuses.”

Lydd drew 0-0 at Lordswood on Tuesday, leaving them 10th in the table, nine points off the play-offs.

They visit Rusthall tomorrow.
