Police are calling for witnesses after a golf buggy was stolen from the Prince’s Golf Club and driven on to the beach.

The golf club in Sandwich Bay reported that it was stolen from the driving range at some time after 1pm on Thursday, November 5.

It was later discovered stuck in the sand by dog-walker John Brewin and his black labrador Barnes Wallis, or Barney for short.

The beachcomber was walking along the sand towards the River Stour on Saturday afternoon when he spotted the buggy.

He said: “It was indeed a sight. Barney wanted to go out to it but I stopped him as the sand and mud can be very dangerous out there.

“The tide was going out at the time and the buggy looked like it had been immersed by the sea by at least one tide, it was down to its axles. On our return we noted the wheel tracks coming out of Prince’s Golf Club area, when passing we popped in to report it.

“Prince’s were grateful for the information and said they would try and recover it at some point.”

Mr Brewin, a former Dover lifeboat crew member, speculated that someone may have tried to let off fireworks from the buggy or tried to get to Ramsgate without realising the river was there.

Mr Brewin and his dog regularly walk along Sandwich Bay and have been known to discover several unexploded bombs, and other artefacts.

The golf club has refused to comment.
