Supporters have rallied to ‘save’ a popular riverside bar and restaurant which has been hit with complaints about noise and disturbance.
They have launched a petition to back the Quayside Bar and Grill in Sandwich which they fear could be threatened with closure.
More than 650 customers and residents have put their names to the campaign, started by Louise Ledwith-Balls – a friend of the owner, who says the venue is an asset to the town with owners passionate about the local community.
“This establishment is not just a place for entertainment but also serves as a hub where locals can connect and create lasting memories,” she says.
“We understand concerns about noise or other disturbances must be addressed; however, as always, such complaints threaten the future of such an institution that plays such a vital role in our community.
“But the owner is very approachable and will always find a solution to avoid upsetting anyone.
“We urge those concerned parties and local authorities alike to work with us towards finding a compromise that allows this beloved venue to continue operating while addressing any valid concerns raised.”
The noise complaints have been lodged with Dover District Council but a spokesman for the authority would only say: “We are aware of this matter and are looking into it.”
The venue has grown from a simple food wagon and a few chairs beside the river to a large marquee with dining tables and comfy sofas, earning a raft of five-star reviews from customers for its food, ambience and live music.
The owner of the venue did not want to speak publicly about the complaints but hundreds of both customers and residents have rallied to support her.
In his entry on the petition on Change.org, Brian Watkins says: “This is a professional and responsibly-run business which has had a hugely positive impact on Sandwich since its launch.
“It should be protected and encouraged to thrive rather than unnecessarily victimised.”
Andrew Minter adds: “The complaints are unfair and unjust. This is not a late-night venue, nor is it a nuisance.
“The Quayside Bar and Grill is an excellent business that compliments the beautiful town of Sandwich and provides employment to local people. It is a trouble-free and friendly venue.”
Stephen Rawlings says: “I am one of the closest houses to the Quayside and I have no issue with them aside from illegal parking. It’s a nice business which is slightly quirky and has great music.”
The venue is believed to be in discussions with Dover District Council to reach a solution.
