Sixth form pupils at Sir Roger Manwood’s have raised more than £4,000 in a record breaking rugby fundraiser for Cancer Research UK.

The group of 17 to 18-year-olds aimed to break the world record for the longest game of touch rugby.

It has not been confirmed yet but the boys hope they have beat the world record of 27 hours by playing the sport for a grand total of 31 hours.

They started at 8.40am on Thursday last week and played through until 3.40pm on Friday.

They took it in turns to play two-hour slots and tried to get a few hours sleep where they could.

Aidan Michael, 18, from Ash, said: “It was very tiring and I just hope it was enough.”

The pupils sent a video of the whole match to an adjudicator at the Guinness World Records.

Aidan said: “We wanted to support a charity that would help a lot of people and is significant in a lot of people’s lives and help as many people as possible.

“Thank you to the referees and witnesses and parents who provided food. They were a great help all the way through. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to do it.”

Ed Prophet said: “I’m really proud to have taken part in this memorable attempt and to have played a small part in organising the attempt.”
