Proposals to tarmac the Guildhall Forecourt have been put on hold for now

08:00, 20 September 2014

The proposal to tarmac the cobbles outside Sandwich Guildhall has been put on hold – for now.

The controversial health and safety move which could see the Forecourt cobbles vanish under asphalt is to be considered at a later date.

Many residents registered their concerns with the council after it was suggested that Cllr Jeff Sneller and Cllr Joe Trussler were coming up with solutions to cobbles which had become loose and could pose a danger.

Cllr Trussler said: “It seems to have got out of all proportion. It was something we proposed for the council to discuss. I don’t want to see tarmac but it’s a question of cost and health and safety.”

Cllr Sneller will be compiling a detailed report to plan what would be the best method to maintain the Forecourt.

The Mayor of Sandwich Cllr Paul Graeme said: “We are very aware of feeling about this.

“There’s no great urgency but we need to consider anything carefully.”
