Discovery Park has confirmed plans for a Sainsbury’s supermarket and petrol station have been submitted to the council.
The proposed 30,000sqft store at the former Pfizer site in Ramsgate Road is currently being considered.
If it goes ahead it could create 200 jobs for the area.
Discover Park managing director Paul Barber said: “Internationally, the most successful business hubs offer a mix of uses and a new food store is a key component in the Discovery Park master plan.
“A new Sainsbury’s store will play a key role in regenerating the site and help achieve the vision for Discovery Park to become a world leading employment location and a pioneer of innovation, providing a range of great benefits to Sandwich.”
The application for an anonymous retail provision was submitted in September 2013.
“Our new store... would help encourage more businesses to Discovery Park and contribute towards the overall target of creating 3,000 new jobs...” - Sainsbury's Colin Rimmer
The Sandwich Sainsbury’s will see a selection of grocery ranges including Sainsbury’s Basics and Taste the Difference, TU clothing, homeware and entertainment products.
The store is part of the master plan of the science, technology and business park to bring vital funds to the park and community.
It is needed for the “long term viability” of Discovery Park, offering a “bullet injection” of finance to sustain the running costs.
Sainsbury’s development executive Colin Rimmer said: “Not only would our new store increase food shopping choice in Sandwich and create 200 new jobs for the local community, but it would also help encourage more businesses to Discovery Park and contribute towards the overall target of creating 3,000 new jobs.”
It will also include a customer restaurant, a four pump petrol station and 344 parking spaces.
