A man has described the moment his car flipped on to its roof after skidding on black ice.

Alex Potter, from Sandwich Bay, said it was a miracle no one was badly hurt.

The accident happened on Saturday at about 7.30pm when Mr Potter, 24, was driving along Station Road, St Margaret’s, with passenger Olwen Forrester, 22.

Mr Potter, a freelance film producer, said: “We came down the hill and it spun on black ice and ended up on the grass verge. We ended up going head first into the hedge and on to our roof.

“I’ve seen the car since and it’s a miracle we’re OK.”

The two were taken to William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. Miss Forrester was taken on a stretcher with suspected back and neck injuries but an x-ray gave her the all-clear.

His mum Sue Potter added: “Police and paramedics said they were lucky to escape without a serious injury. This was a freak accident and should act as a warning for people on that corner.”

Two men saw the accident and stopped to help get the pair out of the blue Vauxhall Corsa.

Mr Potter continued: “It’s lucky that they were there. I owe the guy a beer to say the least.”

Police also praised the two good samaritans, who quickly set about warning oncoming traffic and telephoned emergency services.

The men do not wish to be named but they were told by officers on scene their actions had possibly prevented another crash.

Police and ambulance services arrived on the scene just before 8pm and the road was blocked.

Mrs Potter said people need to be careful on that corner. She said her son had only been driving at 30mph and had not been drinking as he is teetotal.

She said it could have happened to anyone, adding that Station Road is a blind spot for motorists and many accidents happen there.
