A grant of up to £12,000 could see the reopening of a nature reserve dubbed the jewel in Sandwich’s crown.

Gazen Salts has been closed for almost three years after it was inundated by salt water from the tidal surge of December 2013.

The change in the man-made reserve’s fortunes relies on a Tesco Bags of Help grant, but to be in with a chance of the cash boost, it is crucial people vote.

The Strand Street reserve, made by cartoonist Dennis Harle, is a finalist in the scheme and stands the chance of winning a grant of £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Voting is taking place in all Tesco stores in the Thanet area. Shoppers will be given a blue token for free with hich they cast their vote, by depositing the token in the reserve's collection pot in store.

Now, with only days left, Salts’ project manager Karen Potter is urging people to show their support.

She said: “This is a very exciting opportunity and we hope the public will get behind us, spread the word and cast their vote in Thanet Tesco stores.

“Reopening the nature reserve is finally within our grasp after the most challenging period in its history.

“We hear from so many of our 10,000 annual visitors from all over Kent, just how greatly missed the site has been and it would be wonderful for the public to be able to enjoy the reserve again.”
