A leisure centre has unveiled its new look following completion of the first phase of its six-figure renovation.
Sandwich Technology School which took over the lease for Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre in May said the site warranted £250,000's worth of investment to make it fit for use by students and the public.
During a four month Covid-19 related closure, the new owners injected £120,000 worth of works into the building, initially opened by the Queen Mother in 1991.
Repairs have been made to the roof, boilers, air conditioning and ventilation, in addition to a full refurbishment of the sports hall and squash court.
It includes new floors for both facilities, improved LED lighting and painting.
Freedom Leisure is continuing to manage the indoor and outdoor facilities that are open to both members and non-members on the school's behalf.
Centre manager Brad Holland said: “We are delighted to be working with Sandwich Technology School as our new clients. The school have shown a great commitment to improving the facilities with the significant investment they have already made.
"I am looking forward to working closely with the school so that jointly we can continue to provide an affordable leisure facility for the local community.”
Head teacher Tracey Savage said: “It is amazing what a difference a couple of months can make.
"The sports hall floor is now looking superb and I know the PE teachers can’t wait to start using it for lessons with our students.
"It is also great to see the Leisure Centre car park full again as the public are returning to use this great and improved facility.
"I want to say thank you to the staff of Freedom Leisure and our site staff who have all worked so incredibly hard to get everything ready and safe for use by our students and the community alike."
A £30,000 fundraising campaign for further works remains ongoing and has raised more than £8,000.
Sandwich Technology School has also launched a Dover District Lotto page. Every ticket sold will benefit the fundraising effort as well as other local causes, and for every £1 ticket you have a chance to win £25,000.
Mrs Savage added: "For our local leisure centre to survive, we still need people’s support – this can be given by taking out membership at the centre, donating to the just giving page, or by buying Dover Lotto tickets.
"Please help if you can”.
