Warning to dog owners after suspected palm oil found at Sandwich Bay
16:20, 08 February 2018
A warning has been issued after a waxy deposit suspected to be palm oil has washed up at Sandwich Bay.
Dover District Council has cleared away the substance, with results from a sample sent off for testing expected within the next week.
Palm oil can be extremely toxic to animals and can cause severe illness and even death.
Increasing numbers of it are being located washed up on shorelines, often after winter storms, and may be better described as "mineral and vegetable oils" - as palm oil is only one type.
Yellow or white in colour, it can smell like diesel or firelighters.
The authority is advising people not to touch it and to keep dogs on leads at all times.
Anyone who comes across what they expect to be palm oil is urged to call the council on 01304 821199 or email propertyservices@dover.gov.uk
