Pupils were showered in glass after two buses collided near Sandwich Junior School on Thursday afternoon.

It happened on the bend in St Bart’s Road at around 3.30pm.

The number 13A Stagecoach bus, carrying school pupils from Sir Roger Manwood’s and Sandwich Technology School, collided with an out of service bus, smashing four of its windows.

Initial reports suggested all pupils were taken off the bus safely and picked up by another - but further claims revealed that some pupils suffered cuts from the broken glass and were unhappy with the way the incident was handled.

A pupil of Sir Roger Manwood’s School, who wished to remain anonymous, said no one assisted the children off the bus, helped them get home, or told them what to do after it had happened.

A spokesman for Stagecoach said: “I can confirm that two of our vehicles were involved in a road traffic collision in St Bart’s Road, Sandwich.

“A replacement bus was sent from Dover. We are currently investigating what happened which includes viewing CCTV footage.”

Some pupils and passengers suffered cuts to their legs and one had a deep cut to their head and was allegedly treated at hospital with ten stitches.

Police and ambulance services did not attend.

Andy Fisher, school business manager at Sandwich Technology School, said: “As soon as we were aware of the incident, school staff attended, liaised with drivers and spoke with the students to ensure there were no injuries.

“Parents were contacted and collections, where possible, arranged. Other students who also needed the services affected were taken home by school minibus.

“The school did everything possible to ensure student safety and wellbeing. The school works closely with Stagecoach and was in regular contact with them throughout.”

A spokesman for Sir Roger Manwood’s School said: “The school is delighted to receive positive feedback about how our students reacted with sensibility and excellent conduct.”

The road was blocked for around an hour with the drivers’ diverting motorists around the accident.

One resident, Frank Todd, said he stepped in to hand out tea and coffee to the drivers.

He said: “I just made tea and coffee for the drivers so they’re happy. Everyone’s okay, just smashed windows all down one side.”
