Residents in Sandwich criticise application for housing in Woodnesborough Road

00:01, 26 September 2015

An application for three houses in Woodnesborough Road in Sandwich has been criticised over highways issues, potential flooding and out of date maps.

The site is next to 4 Woodnesborough Road, near to the Phoenix Youth Centre in Jubilee Road.

Elleanor Scott, has volunteered at the Phoenix Centre in Sandwich for the last 10 years.

The 52-year-old said part of the access is now the youth centre’s grounds which means the map is out of date.

She said: “This is not going to work on any level. For a start the plan used is out of date.

“It’s in a really stupid place. The road is a blind bend and you wouldn’t be able to see round the corner if any traffic is coming from the other direction.

“The road is on a virtual 45 degree bend which would make it difficult to see oncoming traffic when leaving the site.

“I think all these factors will make the road more dangerous and more likely to lead to traffic incidents and possible injury and fatalities.”

Mrs Scott also said the land is home to a Scots pine tree which is under a Tree Preservation Order, as it is the only one in Sandwich.

Peter Hughes, a resident of Woodnesborough Road, has also submitted an objection. He says part of the site is actually a section of his back garden.

Mr Hughes said: “The land that it is supposed to connect with is part of my back garden, and I have written permission to occupy it until I relinquish my house, which is not likely to be soon.”

Mr Hughes also claims the site has a history of flooding and the plan could block the view of existing nearby residents.
