A clock is set to be erected at the Drill Hall at The Quay to mark the 60th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Sandwich.

The club will be celebrating the milestone next year and, as part of the celebration, decided to enhance the facade of the Drill Hall.

This is a 19th century drill hall used by the Buffs regiment and the Rotary has already obtained the necessary licence from the Ministry of Defence, which owns the building.

Chairman Chris Trim said: “This will provide a public timepiece where none currently exists and I think will enhance the facade of the Drill Hall quite considerably.

“It will also be clearly visible to passing river traffic.”

The clock will be three feet in diameter with gold Roman numerals and commemorative wording on the face.

It is hoped it will be installed in the early part of 2016, subject to approval from Dover District Council.

An application has been submitted to the council but a decision has not yet been made.

A report submitted to DDC claims there will be no material damage to the building other than the need for a connecting electric cable to run the mechanism.

The cost will be covered by Sandwich Rotary and it will be insured.

It is hoped that this will be a great addition to The Quay which looks set to become a tourist destination with the Medieval Boatyard attraction and the possibility of a new museum housing Sandwich’s Magna Carta as well.

Celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary will take place next year with an international weekend with sister clubs France, Belgium and Germany in June.

There will also be a gala dinner and a fun game of bat and trap.
