Gorgeous George the bull has become famous not only in the town of Sandwich but all over Kent after winning his second gong this year.

Goldstone Butchers, part of Chandler and Dunn Ltd based at Lower Goldstone Farm in Ash, were awarded the title of Male Sussex Champion at the South of England Show in Ardingly, for their three-year-old bull, nicknamed Gorgeous George, in June.

Last month, George was crowned Male Sussex Champion and Breed Champion at the Kent County Show in Detling.

The Chandlers founded the farm in 1809 and four generations ago the Dunn family joined the business. John Dunn started the livestock in 1947 and today, his granddaughter Alice Dunn runs the butchers shop in Ash where they sell the produce from their cattle and sheep.

Miss Dunn said: “The shows only come around once a year and we usually take a couple along. They are judged on all sorts of things from colour and form to muscle and definition.

“George is very popular. He’s only three years old which is quite young for this sort of thing.

“Stockman Jordan Thompson and his wife Victoria, they and my dad Roger Dunn do a lot of work with him. They are the ones who have got him up to spec.

“They take him up and down the road here and have taught him how to behave.”

Since the farm’s open day in June, docile George has become well known and loved by adults and children alike.

Miss Dunn added: “Now the locals know him, they are always asking me about him!”

In addition to George’s awards, the butchers, who attend Sandwich market in Guildhall Forecourt every Thursday, have just celebrated the tenth anniversary of their shop opening.

Goldstone Butchers supply meat to award-winning burger restaurant Burger Bros who are based at the Deal Hoy in Duke Street and also to new pub in Sandwich - The Hop and Huffkin.

The shop in Cop Street, Ash is open Tuesday to Friday from 9am - 5pm and Saturday from 9am - 1pm.
