Sandwich Town Tidal Defence scheme has been shortlisted for the Kent Design and Development awards.

The finalists for 2014 have now been revealed and the flood defence scheme for Sandwich has been nominated in the Civils and Infrastructure category.

The award celebrates excellence in design and construction and according to the website Sandwich Town Tidal Defence scheme is "the single biggest flood prevention scheme to be built in Kent in the last three decades, it protects 488 homes and 94 businesses, and proved itself shortly after phase one of construction had finished during the high tides of December 2013."

Alex Hicken of DHA Planning, sponsors of the overall Project of the Year award. He said: “The shortlist demonstrates that Kent is home to a wide range of innovative projects. Once again this shows how good quality design is being adopted by the county’s developers and having a positive impact on communities.”

It is organised by DHA Planning, Kent County Council, and PR and marketing agency Maxim.

Mark Dance, cabinet member for economic development at Kent County Council, said: “Economic improvements, combined with a positive outlook for the county’s property industry, mean there is a lot to celebrate in Kent and we look forward to honouring the winners in November.”

Site visits are currently underway and the winners will be announced at a ceremony in November.
