A generator is being used to supply electricity to a Spar shop after 24,000 litres of rain water flooded its cellar.

The basement of the store located in Market Street in Sandwich became submerged with water a metre high after heavy rain.

Two crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service were called to the site spending two hours pumping away the water.

UK Power Networks also attended to disconnect the electricity supply, with the shop shut for four days.

The water caused serious damage to the electrical board sparking fears the mini supermarket would need to be closed for up to six weeks.

However, the use of generators has allowed the business to reopen.

Repairs are still required although no date has been given for these.

A Spar spokesman said: "On Friday, November 8 the store in Sandwich experienced a flood in the cellar due to heavy rain meaning some 24,000 litres of water had to be drained from the site by the Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

"There was serious damage to the electrical board and while it appeared the store might have to close for up to six weeks, we are happy to report it reopened on the morning of Tuesday, November 12 powered by generators.

"We look forward to continuing to serve the local community without the need for an extended closure of the store."

Heavy downpours have historically caused flooding around Sandwich.

In December 2013, homes and offices were flooded, residents evacuated from houses and tens of thousands of pounds of damage was reported after two tidal surges.

As a result the town's Gazen Salts Nature Reserve lost 450 trees and only reopened last year.

In July and September 2014, Moat Sole experienced flooding with the early incident dampening the spirit of the town's annual Sandwich Folk and Ale Festival.

Incidents have been far fewer since flooding defences were installed along the River Stour in 2015.

The £21.7 million scheme involved work on 16 individual reaches of the river, protecting 488 homes and 94 commercial properties.

It was delivered in partnership by the Environment Agency, Pfizer and Kent County Council.

Last month, the Spar was targeted by ‘hooded’ burglars who broke down the shop doors but made off with nothing. Police say enquiries are ongoing.
