A food initiative aimed at feeding families struggling to afford supermarket prices will continue in Sandwich.

Sandwich Pantry was launched six months ago as a pilot scheme, delivering £15-£20 worth of supermarket goods to people in need for a weekly subscription of £4.

The scheme is volunteer led out of St Peter’s Church in Market Street and made possible due to Fareshare - a national organisation fighting hunger and tackling food waste, local supermarkets and farm shops.

Spokesman David Wood, said: "Having clearly established that there is a local requirement for this service, we would like to officially announce our intention to continue with our work.

"We have been supported by the St Peter’s Care and Share, Sandwich Town Council’s Toll Bridge Fund, Dover District Council Community Grants Scheme and crucially by ‘Deal with it’, an organisation that donates very good quality surplus produce from our local farms."

The service is for people whose financial situation makes it hard to buy food including users of food banks and or those who do not qualify for food bank help.
