An appeal has been launched to find a man after drain covers were stolen.

Two cast iron covers were reportedly taken from White Wood Road in Eastry, near Sandwich, by a man who arrived at the location in a dark Ford Transit van.

They were taken between 1.55pm and 2.10pm on Wednesday, January 26, with Kent Police issuing an appeal today.

A CCTV image has been released to accompany the appeal, in the hopes the man pictured will be able to help with the investigation.

The county council has also revealed the true cost of the theft - which includes the price to replace the covers, as well as a safety risk.

PC Tom Booth of Dover’s policing team said: "We believe the person in the CCTV image may be able to assist us with our investigation.

"Although his face cannot be clearly seen, we are hopeful someone may still recognise him and come forward with information."

Kent County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, David Brazier, added: "The theft of highway drainage covers represents a real danger to the safety of everyone, as an unguarded hole is left in the ground.

"As well as the risk this poses to all highway users, it also means KCC has to make the area safe and then replace the cover and frame.

"This represents a cost to KCC, which could potentially reach hundreds of pounds at a time."

Anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV image is encouraged to call the appeal line on 01843 222289 quoting reference 46/19040/22.
