The proposed Waitrose store in Sandwich has not received any objections from Kent County Council, developers reveal.

Kimberley, the developers of the 18,000sq ft Waitrose store on Dover Road has today revealed that the application has not been objected by Kent Highways.

This comes after Sandwich Town Council voiced its objections to the plans on the grounds of a traffic issue.

Councillors stated that the already busy road near to Sandwich Technology School would become dangerous if the traffic from the supermarket was allowed to turn into the town.

Cllr Joe Trussler explained he wanted to see traffic turning away from the development rather than travelling through the town.

A spokesman for Waitrose said: “As the town council in Sandwich has expressed concern about the traffic on Dover Road, we would like to reassure residents that the Highways Authority, Kent County Council, has made no objections to our plans.

“We believe allowing customers to continue their journey from our site into the town centre will help support businesses there and further add to the advantages of our site being in such close proximity to the town centre.

“We expect that at the Planning Committee meeting our proposal will be considered alongside the out of town 30,000sq ft supermarket in Discovery Park.”

It is believed that the application for a Sainsbury’s supermarket at the science and business park on Ramsgate Road will also be considered at the same planning meeting soon.
