FENCER Kate Morwell-Neave has been selected to fight for Great Britain in the Veterans European Team Championship in Spain in May.

Kate, who is head coach of the Sandwich-based Invicta Fencing Club, earned her place after an impressive performance in the National Veterans Championship at Gloucester.

The 41-year-old from Hoaden, near Ash, finished runner-up in the epee, where she lost in the final to Kate Smith of London Thames Fencing Club. She was also fourth in the sabre, where she knocked out the defending champion Sue Benney, and 10th in the foil.

Kate, who has been fencing for 31 years, also finished second in the Master of Arms section in which all a competitor’s results with the three different weapons are added together.

She said: “My selection for Spain means that I have finally got the British tracksuit that have been seeking for 25 years!”
