Jordan Spieth lost ground after a dramatic end to his third round at The Open on Saturday.
Spieth had a great chance to go into the lead by himself at 16 but missed a birdie chance on the par three.
Then he dropped a shot at the 17th and three-putted the last to end the day three shots off leader Louis Oosthuizen.
The South African also stumbled on the back nine but recovered with a birdie on 16 to end the day 12 under par.
Testing pin positions meant that despite the calm conditions - blue skies and sunshine throughout the day with light winds - scoring was far from easy.
His nearest challenger is Collin Morikawa, who dropped off the pace with two bogeys in his first five holes but recovered to post a 68, missing a birdie opportunity at the last which would have seen him end the day level with Oosthuizen.
Corey Conners was the biggest mover of the day, climbing up 13 places to finish four shots off the leader after a faultless round of 66, four birdies coming in the space of five holes on the back nine.
That score was bettered by Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, who birdied the last two holes to shoot a 65 and sit eight shots off the lead going into the last round.
Jon Rahm is five off the lead but Dustin Johnson lost ground, dropping five shots in his first 11 holes before two birdies saw him recover to close on four under.
Matt Wallace, Justin Rose and Matthew Fitzpatrick all sit at three under alongside Brooks Koepka, one shot ahead of Tommy Fleetwood.
Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter are one under, but it was a day to forget for big-hitting Bryson DeChambeau. Out in the second game of the day, the American double-bogeyed the ninth and finished with a round of 72 to sit three over par.
