The Open Championship: Kent's Steven Tiley falls agonisingly short in final qualifying

Kent golfer Steven Tiley missed out on qualification for The Open Championship by one shot on Tuesday.

Tiley, representing Deal's Royal Cinque Ports club, finished tied for fourth with an eight-under-par 136 at St Annes Old Links.

The top three from each of the four host venues secured an opportunity to compete for the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush later this month.

Rochester and Cobham's Jordan Godwin posed as Kent's best representative at Prince's, finishing tied for 11th after shooting a two-under-par 142.

The Sandwich course played stage to a surprise winner as Chelmsford amateur Curtis Knipes topped the leaderboard on nine-under-par 135.

Moor Park's Callum Shinkwin (nine-under-par 135) and Canadian Austin Connelly (eight-under-par 136) claimed the other two qualification slots at Prince's.

Hever Castle amateur Jensen Hull shared 18th with Poland's Mateusz Gradecki on a one-under-par 143.

Daniel Brown of Littlestone was down in joint-20th with a level-par 144, followed by CK Group's Matt Ford in joint-25th at one-over-par 145.

Representing Royal Blackheath, Freddie Price was one of six players to share 36th with a three-over-par 147.

Slightly further down in joint-42nd was Chestfield's Warren Bennett, who finished on a four-over-par 148.

He was accompanied on the same score by Rochester and Cobham Park's Zak Morgan, whose club teammate Jack Colegate came tied for 49th after his five-over-par 149.

Oliver Sly, who belongs to Knole Park in Sevenoaks, was next in line as one of four players in 51st following his six-over-par 150, with Poult Wood's Craig Sutherland finishing on the same score.

Chislehurst amateur Liam Burns meanwhile joined Prince's own Francis McGuirk in tied for 55th with two other players with a seven-over-par 151.

Alfie Plant, who plays for Sundridge Park in Bromley, was tied for 34th with a four-over-par 148 at Hollinwell.

The unattached Max Orrin, originally from Margate, meanwhile finished joint-20th on a one-over-par 145 on the Nottinghamshire course.
