The proposed site for a war memorial in Borough Green gets 'overwhelming support'

Discussions of where to put a war memorial in Borough Green have gained momentum after getting 'overwhelming support' from residents.
The memorial hopes to remember those who died fighting in conflict, who lived in what is now the civil parish of Borough Green.
Five proposed locations were announced, with the favourite emerging as a grass area on the junction of the A25 and Western Road opposite the former Red Lion pub.Financial backing shouldn't become an issue for the memorial, with Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council increasing the Community Enhancement Fund grant awarded from £5,000 to £7,500.
As the Parish Council already holds a Cultivation Licence, no planning permission would be required to erect the memorial on this particular site.
The fact that it's only a short walk to churches in the area is also considered to be a positive factor.
Mike Taylor, Parish Council Chairman said: "the beauty of the Western Road position is that it's a focal point on the gateway to the village, out of 160 votes we have received so far, only five would prefer a different location.
"It's fairly conclusive that this is the best site for the memorial."
He also thanked Suzanne Young, on behalf of the council, whose extensive research into the names of the fallen has given the memorial a monumental step forward.
Other possible locations include a memorial on the tranquil area Crowhill, the library garden, the Rock Road junction with Quarry Hill Road, and outside the Village Hall.
