Danny Barrett, a watch manager in Sevenoaks, said: "Luckily nobody was injured in this incident. It could have been a lot worse.

"We have attended incidents where a candle has been to blame for severe damage to a property and sometimes even worse.

"Whether using candles for light or decoration, it’s really important that people ensure the flame is fully out before going to bed or leaving the room – never leave a lighted candle unattended."

He also issued some advice on fire safety.

Candles should be fitted and placed on a non-flammable surface.

They should also not be left unattended or near curtains, bedding and clothing.

It is also important to have a working smoke alarm.
