But one woman, from Sevenoaks, and who wanted to remain anonymous, became so annoyed with her rule-breaking neighbour, she reported her to the council.

It comes days after Thames Water joined Southern Water and South East Water in imposing a ban.

The angered resident from the leafy green town told inews: “I live in a cul-de-sac and we can all see what goes on.

“Our neighbour is in her 70s and hired someone to water her garden and my family and I are furious.

“I can’t believe the hypocrisy as she is always the first to tell us when we are not following the rules.

"I was really annoyed as my garden has a lot of fruit and veg that I am growing and I am a proud gardener but I can’t use my hosepipe as there is a ban – so why is she allowed to use it?”

After spotting her pensioner neighbour had hired a gardener to water her plants, the irate wife and her husband told other members of the cul-de-sac who were equally fuming.

She added: “I am so annoyed, I live with my family of four and our garden is drying up, our grass is going a brown colour and we have followed the rules so why can’t everyone and why does she feel she can get away with it?”

The woman contacted the council to make an anonymous complaint and was told the issue would be looked into, but she doesn’t believe any action will be taken.

“I was tempted to take photos but I didn’t want to get caught,” she said.

“I am continuing to keep an eye on the neighbour and if it happens again my husband and I will speak to her and the council to give her a warning.

“We will not tolerate anyone breaking the rules and I am really angry about this and fuming when I see people ignoring the rules.”

The angered gardener is part of a minority of people in the county who, when asked by KentOnline, said they wouldn't be snitching on their neighbours if they decided to use their hosepipes during the ban.

A Thames Water spokesperson added: “We don’t expect people to tell us if their neighbours are using hosepipes but if we become aware of customers breaking the ban we’ll consider contacting them to urge them to use water responsibly.”
