Detectives from British Transport Police have launched a murder investigation after a man died at a Kent train station on Sunday.

Although initially detectives did not think the death was suspicious, further inquiries have brought new information to light.

Detectives are therefore treating the man's death as suspicious, and have launched a murder investigation.

Officers believe the victim was chased into the station by another man shortly before 9.30pm, and was then chased onto the tracks.

A short while later, the other man walked back onto the platform and exited the station.

CCTV images have been released of a person that the police need to speak to.

DCI Paul Langley, senior investigating officer, said: "Understandably, this is an incredibly upsetting incident for this man's family, and we have specialist family liaison officers offering them support.

"Whilst formal identification is yet to take place, we believe this man is a 24-year-old from the Croydon area.

"A post-mortem examination will take place in the coming days, from which we hope to understand exactly how this man died.

"In the meantime, we are trawling through all available CCTV and looking to speak with any witnesses or local residents who saw or heard anything.

"Knockholt station is in a rural location and I know that very few people are likely to have been in the area at the time when both the victim and suspect went onto the tracks.

"However, if you were in the area at the time and saw a man chasing another, please contact us as a matter of urgency.”

Southeastern trains are not stopping at Knockholt as a result of ongoing police investigation work.

A replacement bus service is in place between Knockholt and Chelsfield. Services are expected to resume around midday today.
